John Boehner’s Doublespeak on Amnesty

As Pray For US continues to warn Americans about the dangers of the amnesty scam that is being perpetrated on our nation, House Speaker John Boehner is playing both sides of the fence. One day he says on national television that he’s willing to violate the Hastert Rule in order to ram amnesty through the House and the next… well, he almost says that he won’t violate the Hastert Rule.

The Hastert Rule, for those who don’t know, is a House rule that prevents a bill from coming to the floor unless a majority of the MAJORITY PARTY agrees to it. This prevents a Republican-In-Name-Only from passing Barack Obama’s pet legislation with a majority of Democrats and minority of Republicans (and vice-versa) in a closely-divided House.

There are currently 234 Republicans and 201 Democrats, so Boehner would only need 17 GOP members to break ranks and pass amnesty – IF he violates the Hastert Rule.

For clarification purposes, here are Mr. Boehner’s exact words from his exchange with George Stephanopolous on ABC News:

STEPHANOPOULOS: But in the end, you’re gonna have to make the big call. You’re gonna have to make the call on whether or not to allow a vote on a bill– that perhaps doesn’t get a majority of Republicans. (COUGH) In the past, you have not been willing to do that. Are you willing to do it now?

BOEHNER: George, I– listen. I’ve allowed the House to work with– t– well, more than any speaker in modern history, to the point where there are some bills that have passed– with a majority of Democrats– in favor, and a minority of Republicans–

STEPHANOPOULOS: And you’re willing to do that with immigration.

BOEHNER: –and I’ve been criticized for it. What I’m committed to is a fair and open process on the floor of the House– so that all members– have an opportunity.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And–

BOEHNER: It’s not up– it’s not about what I want. It’s about what the House wants. And my job is– as speaker– is to ensure that all members on both sides have a fair shot at their ideas– (End Transcript)

Mr. Boehner is not exactly drawing a line in the sand here. He’s blathering about giving the Democrats a “fair shot” at passing legislation that a majority of conservatives do not want.

And he is BRAGGING about having violated the Hastert Rule in the past.

After receiving some flak from a couple of House Members who have reminded Mr. Boehner about the Hastert Rule, the Speaker held a blustering press conference today and claimed that a majority of Republicans will be needed in order to pass amnesty.

Here are his remarks from a press conference today – and please read carefully:

“On the House side, I’ve made clear to our members that we’re going to have a discussion about this on July 10th.  We’re going to have a special conference and we’re going to lay all of this out and listen to what the members have to say.  “

“I also suggested to our members today that any immigration reform bill that is going to go into law ought to have a majority of both parties’ support if we’re really serious about making that happen.  And so I don’t see any way of bringing an immigration bill to the floor that doesn’t have a majority support of Republicans.”

Some are claiming that this is a declaration that Boehner intends to follow the Hastert Rule. They’re going to have a meeting. They’re going to listen to the members. The bill OUGHT to have majority support to pass.

This is more doublespeak from Barack Obama’s golfing buddy, John Boehner, who raised taxes on the middle class, raised the debt ceiling, fired conservative Congress Members from Committee positions after they voted against Mr. Obama’s agenda and tried to quash the investigation into Operation Fast & Furious.

Jesus said, “Ye shall know them by their fruits” when warning that we should not simply take someone at their word.

Boehner’s contradictory declarations, viewed in the context of his past fruits, do not bode well for America in terms of an amnesty deal. Believe Mr. Boehner at your own peril.
