The following prayer and study were delivered on the January 27, 2013 episode of Pray For US radio. The program aired originally on KCAA 1050 AM in San Bernardino, California. Topics for discussion on the program included Barack Obama’s cap-and-trade scheme for his second term in office and the defeat of Harry Reid’s filibuster rule change. The podcast of this program is archived on this site.
Deuteronomy 1:13-:15 “Take your wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. And you answered me, and said, the thing which you have spoken is good for us to do. So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them leaders over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.”
Here we see an ancient example of a representative form of government. It also has a military structure, obviously, but this was the form of government that God approved for the Israelites.
But there was also a character requirement for one to be selected as a representative leader in Israel.
They needed to have wisdom and understanding, according to the Biblical standard for those attributes. They needed to be honest men of integrity, and courageous. And they needed to have a reputation among their tribes – or communities if you will – for having those qualities.
Currently, three percent of the elected members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate are under investigation by the FBI, the Department of Justice, the Federal Election Commission, the IRS or other regulatory or law enforcement agencies. Three percent, that’s 15 Congressmen and Senators. These are active investigations of sitting members of Congress, for crimes ranging from insider trading to sexually exploiting children. And those are just the investigations that we know about.
Do these sound like men of wisdom and understanding, who are worthy of representing your family or business interests?
So as we do many times on this program, today we offer this prayer to God for our elected representatives:
Our God and our Father,
May Your light shine on the dark deeds that are being committed by those in power.
We live as an oppressed people today, and though we still have a voice and still have some power to sway our politicians, they are increasingly defiant to Your face.
They seek to strip us of rights that are guaranteed to us, by virtue of us being created in Your image.
We pray for these leaders today, Father. We pray that those who are lost, who have been given over to the sins of greed and lust, would come to understand your ultimate justice.
And that they would repent of their sin and turn from their wicked ways.
And if they will not do so, we pray that you would cast them down in their pride, that we might replace them at the ballot box with righteous representatives of the people who have wisdom and understanding.
And for those elected Representatives and Senators that do know your face, we pray that their light will not be put under a bushel.
We ask and pray these things in Jesus’ name.
Many people, especially those who are new to the Christian faith, do no know how to pray. We have provided a short article for you titled, How to Pray to the God of the Bible.
