– Las Vegas, NV: When President Harry Truman was given the chance to end World War II almost instantly by using the “nuclear option” on Japan, he didn’t hesitate. He knew it was the right thing to do and he did it. Republicans in the U.S. Senate have a “nuclear option” of their own that would end Democrat obstructionism, re-open the government, fully fund the border wall and end chain migration. They must follow Harry Truman’s example and do the right thing for the American people.
What is the “nuclear option” anyway? The Knife Media states, “… the “nuclear option” is a term supposedly coined by The Washington Times after an interview with former Republican Sen. Trent Lott. It refers to the process of changing Senate rules and eliminating the filibuster so that legislation can pass with a simple majority.”
The Senate has used the “nuclear option,” or changed rules, to confirm nominees to judicial posts. In 2013, then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer changed Senate confirmation rules for posts in lower courts to help confirm President Obama’s judicial nominees. Last year, current Majority Leader Mitch McConnell changed Senate confirmation rules for the U.S. Supreme Court to confirm Neil Gorsuch.
Once changed they’re changed…
Once the Senate rules are changed, they’re changed; it sets a precedent for the required number of votes on a topic. Changing the rules for legislative votes can limit the minority party’s ability to object to bills, so a majority party may not want to change the rules because it would set a precedent that might affect the party when it’s a minority in the future, according to USA Today. According to Politifact, the “nuclear option” has not been used to change legislative voting rules.
Using a nearly 200 year old rule called the “filibuster” requiring 60 votes to pass legislation, Congressional Democrats have shut down the government because of their devotion to DACA, the program that protects from deportation over 800,000 illegal aliens in the country. They are refusing to vote for a government funding bill that builds the border wall and ends “chain migration”. And even though they are a minority in the Senate, the filibuster anachronism gives the Democrats the power to block this urgently needed legislation.
However the Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, has the same solution available to him that Harry Truman had. He can use what’s commonly called the “nuclear option” and get rid of the filibuster rule with a simple majority of 51 votes in the Senate. There are currently 51 Republican Senators, with Vice President Mike Pence able to break any tie votes meaning there are in reality 52 Republican votes.
Since the filibuster is a Senate rule and not a law, all McConnell has to do is make a motion to end the filibuster, get it passed and voila – the “nuclear option” will be end the filibuster just as it did the Japanese Empire. Without the filibuster the Democrats will be powerless to stop legislation that will re-open the government, build the border wall and end chain migration.
Most GOP leadership fully support invoking the nuclear option. For example House Leader Kevin McCarthy has openly called upon the Senate to do so.
You’ll be in very good company demanding that Senate Republicans use the “nuclear option” to end the filibuster rule. Here’s what President Trump had to say on Sunday: “Great to see how hard Republicans are fighting for our military and safety at the Border. The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked. If stalemate continues, Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget.”
